He stared at the whiteboard as if it had personally offended him. Which it had. In some small way. Working in groups of two wasn't terrible. Especially when it was an assignment that required less socializing and more work. But what was the problem was that damn last name. Some people shared their last names with family members. He shared his with unidentified victims of murder. Or people with amnesia in hospitals. Jane Doe. John Doe. It was nothing more than a placeholder. Bakura maybe stared at the whiteboard a few seconds too long before he finally stood up and moved to his assigned station. He sat down at the corner station and pulled out his notebook, opening it to the lecture notes from the class before. He had taken notes, sure, but he hadn't realized he would be using them this soon. Not to mention in a real world setting beyond just 'study this for a test later'. No matter. He could stumble through this, and thankfully the teacher was still in the middle of the demonstration, so it wouldn't be going in completely blind now would it? As he waited for his partner to come, Bakura started pulling out the needed materials from the drawer of the station. Some beakers, gloves, safety glasses, glass containers, and even a microscope tucked in the back of the drawer for later lessons. At least that looked fun. Bakura started quietly setting up.

Atem arched his brow at the board and searched the classroom. His eyes lit on Bakura, already setting up. He made his way to the table. "You're a little eager aren't you?" He chuckled and cocked his hip on the table. "It's the first day. Relax." He slid into his stool and leaned over to look at Bakura's notes with a warm smile. "Meticulous aren't you. What would you like me to help you with?" He offered. Atem wasn't one to not pull his own weight, and he was pretty damn sure he had done this lab more than once. "I'm Atem by the way, though...I suppose from the board that would be obvious, and you're Bakura?" What was with all the white hair around here? Was it some kind of fad? Although Atem must admit Bakura's was the most interesting he had seen thus far.

He jerked slightly when very suddenly the other boy was right up in his space. "Oh. Uh. I just, thought I should." He gave a small shrug and then hello he was RIGHT UP in his space. Bakura stiffened up and leaned away slightly when Atem moved forward to look at his notes. "Ah, thank you. Although I didn't know we would be having to use them in this way. At least not on the first day." He managed a smile, and hell, even to not shy away further. Success? It helped that Atem didn't seem like an absolute asshole. Like, for example, Valon. He gave Atem a small nod. "Yeah. I'm Bakura. And I know you're Atem. The teacher just, uh, anyway nice to meet you." He should offer a handshake, right? Instead he ducked his head back down towards his notes. "If you want to help you can get the chemicals we need for this experiment. I think we neeeed..." He tapped the end of his pencil on his lips as he scanned the list. "Uh, vials one, five, and seven."

Atem watched the pencil tapping against Bakura's lips and damn that was kind of attractive. He stood up to busy himself. "Alright." Atem nodded retrieving the correct vials. He came back and set the in the holder. "Anything else I can help you with?" He asked sliding back onto his stool. "I'm not going to lie, me and chemistry don't really get along." He admitted sheepishly. "The last time involved a chemical shower and evacuation."

Well that caught his attention. Bakura finally looked up to meet Atem's eyes. "A chemical shower? But don't you like, have to strip down completely for that? In the middle of the class?" Sure during it the students not involved would be evacuated but still! You started stripping with all those other people in the room still with you. Bakura guessed when you were panicking over chemicals you must not stop to care about modesty. "Well uh, I don't know about you but I'd rather not get acid on me. Or anyone else for that matter." A hint of a humorous tone had crept into his voice.
"Alright." He slid over a pair of gloves and safety goggles, pulling his own gloves on as he did so. "I think it will be fine. Just, try and not die and we will be golden." Oh no. More of that morbid humor was slipping out. He quickly pulled the smile off his face. "I mean, let's just take it slowly."

"I did. I was pretty damn naked." He shrugged. "I got nothing to hide." He had to wink. The face Bakura was pulling was pretty damn priceless. "Yeaaaah, I'm thinking not getting flesh eating chemicals on me again would be a helluva plush personally. Also no fires, but that was totally not my fault." Was he joking? Who knew.
He laughed at Bakura's humor. "Well I mean we have to DYE, but you don't want me to DIE?" He asked, hoping Bakura would pick up on the joke. Already Atem felt at ease with him.

"Flesh eating? What high school did you go to that let students work with flesh eating chemicals?" More importantly why the hell had he not gone to a high school that let him work with flesh eating chemicals?! Some people got all the damn luck. He could imagine it, getting different kind of meat, chicken, pig, cow, and then seeing which one it would eat through fastest. Like some sort of race. That would have been, so. much. fun. Bakura's high school had been in England. And it had kind of sucked. A lot. When he had found out public schools in America didn't require uniforms he had been pissed. But that was then and this was now. And right now Atem had just made a word pun. Bakura looked at him with a completely straight face.
"If you were do die while dyeing that would be really dire. I suggest that you keep the dye off so we avoid needing to dry the dye so you dont die."

Atem stared. Just stared. "Well a really snooty private one actually." Atem had hated it, though they had a amazing chess team and debate was first in the tri-state area, not to mention the football team. But it was so elite and Atem hated being part of such a group of dickbags. He laughed. Just a loud gawffing he couldn't help when Bakura spouted his own quirky pun.
"It would be dire to die hurr." He said smirking back. "You will let you be the dyer so things don't get to dire, and i don't die hurr."

Bakura actually slammed his hands down on the table at that. "You did NOT just say that. You did. You just-" Astounding. Most people looked at him like he was insane when he joked like that. Mostly because his wit was so dry usually that no one could ever tell if he was talking or actually making a joke. With an incredulous look Bakura slowly shook his head. "Okay. We need to stop. Because I could do this all day but mostly because we have less than an hour and we haven't even started." He gestured to the half set up experiment on the table in front of them.

Atem laughed. How had he found the most entertaining person on the entire planet in his science class? "I did. I did indeed just say that." He nodded. "Alright, seriously though, if you don't tell me what to do this will only end in tears. So guide me obi wan." He said smirking. He was a well rounded guy who happened to like all the classics okay?

"Patience, young Padawan. To rush ahead when dealing with acids would result in failure. Now set up the burner and hand me the second vial and the dye."

Atem grinned more and did what he was told handing off the desired vial and dye. He looked at the burner with apprehension, but he swallowed, steeled himself, and set it up as indicaated. "Alright so far so no firey death." He mumbled. "What now?"

Bakura kept his eyes mainly on the notes, glancing up every few moments to move something or add another thing to something different and the like. The solution turned a lighter color and with a puzzled look he glanced at the notes several more times. "Okay. That's...correct? Uh, yes. Okay. This is right. So now we just..." Trailing off, and double checking the notes one last time, he poured the mixture into the vial over the Bunsen burner. The two liquids reacted to each other but there was no great explosion of glass and acid. A good thing then? "Okay. I think that's the right reaction." Once the vial was heated enough he moved it with the tongs to the holder, turning off the burner. "I'm flying a little blind here. This should be right though." Once the vial was set down he used his finger to push his glasses farther up the bridge of his nose. "Now we...wait? Yes. We wait three minutes then add the third liquid."

Atem watched in awe as Bakura walked him through the steps. With no explosion!. Hey Bakura.'" He said sliding closer. "If I have trouble with the course, do you think you could walk me through it?" Atem gave his best winning smile. "You seem really knowledgeable and while I usually get stuff, I just want to cover all the bases." Atem took the third vial from bakura's hand, fingers brushing the others. "What is this anyway?" He asked curiously holding it up to the light.

"Wh-ah, well, we're going to be partnered for most of the labs this year, so of course i'll be helping you. That's kind of the, uh, point to partners right?" He trailed off. "I'm not the best when it comes to science, but I can follow directions for the most part." Giving a small jolt at the brief (intentional?) touch of fingers Bakura scrambled to move past it. "OH. Uh. It's.....well acid. I think." His voice fell slightly more dry. "Kind of make sense wouldn't it. It being acid in an acid lab. Hydroelectric?"
